  • >every video is in Japanese

    Walfas, you are a weealfboo.

  • 1. More Bad Apple? Still it looks like Touhou music is getting popular.

    2. This game reminds of a faster Musashi. But all top-down action platformers with swords are like that. Or is it more like Ys?

3-4. It’s about that time again. that last one was pretty interesting though.

  • Whew…lotta commentary considering the small number of videos involved. Fair warning.

    1. “Bad Apple on Traditional Instruments”
Caught this last week thanks to another commenter’s link. Beautifully done, a remarkable combination of new and old Japanese culture. I have to wonder how many people in the audience were not already fans of Touhou, though. It would be interesting to see if this sort of performance attracted listeners who simply like traditional Japanese music.

    2. “Perfect Armed Cherry Blossom” (lit., “Dream of Bewitching Weaponry”)
This is a demo version made for Comiket 80.

Very nicely done. Beautiful environment design, character design and movement, pretty music, and interesting-looking gameplay. Reminds me a lot of Star Ocean 2 and similar. Of course, it’s impossible to tell at this point how well the controls would work or how varied and interesting the gameplay would remain throughout, but I’d certainly play it if I knew my computer could handle the game and if I could get a copy.

    Stage 1: Fairy Forest
The creator makes note of the waving grass and traveling cloud shadows, and promises a greater variety of sword techniques in the final version. Also, the video was captured at 30 fps, but the game normally moves at twice that speed. He was really fussy about making the water surface in the pond area.

    Stage 2: Genbu Swamp
You have to whack down the mushrooms blocking your path. He plans to include spell card abilities too, though they’re not in this demo. Torches light the cave interior, and the shadows waver in sync with the flames.

Stage 3: Waterfall of the Heavens
He says he’s included new gimmicks which increased the action-game feel. This may refer to the various elevator panels. He’s working hard to make the game a little more fun, at least.

    Bosses
    Cirno, the Little Ice Fairy
Ah, and there’s the danmaku. Gotta be quick to leap over it steadily.

    Marisa Kirisame, the Ordinary Magician
Marisa was newly added as a boss for the C80 demo version. Looks a bit more challenging. Boss stages might be where I’d hit a wall getting through the game…

Momiji Inubashiri, the Patrol Youkai Underling
This scene demonstrates the harsh counterattacks you can suffer if you attack a boss that’s blocking.

Aya Shameimaru, the Traditional Illusory Reporter
Nice representation of Aya’s speed and wind abilities.

Great Frog, Ruler of the Pond
Well…wasn’t expecting this boss. Interesting it can actually back-kick if you harass it from behind.
The author notes here that he hopes to have the game completed within the year. Once it’s done, he plans to have an online demo version available.

    3. “Touhou PVD2 Trailer”
Part 1 – Infinite World: Looks great, if a bit choppier than Fantasy Kaleidoscope. I’m not sure if it’s meant to tell any given story or just showcase as many characters as possible.
Part 2 – This Hand of Mind, That Hand of Yours: Appears to be a retelling of Byakuren and the UFO cast’s story with a deceptively cute style for the subject matter. I grinned at Shou and Ichirin glomping Murasa.
Part 3 – Silver Bullet Marionette: Fun-looking vignette with the SDM crew, and I’m digging the music.
Part 4 – Heartquake Super Shock: Full-CG Touhou models are nothing new now, but the music’s kinda catchy, and I like the lighting effects on top of the modeling.
Part 5 – Awakened Sister Vamp: More fun at SDM with Flandre running loose and Sakuya and Patchouli acting to stop her. I get the feeling I’ve seen this part on its own before.

    4. “Dream of Reality”
Musical advertisement/companion to a doujinshi in which Renko finally gets to Gensokyo, or so it seems. Looks like an interesting story, and the animation of the images and text works well with the music and the mood it sets.

  • Also, there’s an older demo of the Youmu game.
The link is in one of the YT comments.
Works flawless on my laptop, quite a good game.
