Swine flu is spreading rapidly… as a topic of discussion! So many people are saying things along the lines of “Oh no, swine flu, we’re going to die!” and I can’t even look up “plural version of flu” on Google without getting a bunch of swine flu results in the first page. And even dictionary.com‘s entry about the word “flu” has “swine flu” in it! And now the swine flu is on this site! How did that happen?! Run! Run before you catch it from the internet!

Funny part is the swine flu has a lower fatality rate then well the regular flu does. 1 American death by swine flu doesn’t really compare to the 1000 deaths that happened in the same period of time.

Actually, the plural of “flu” probably IS “flus”. It just doesn’t look right. You could always cheat and say “flu viruses” or “influenzas”…
Re: getting infected, last I heard, so long as you’re in good health and exercise standard common-sense practices (washing hands properly and frequently, getting proper nutrition, covering your mouth when you sneeze, avoiding/minimizing contact with obviously ill people), you should be fine.
Swine Flu Shwine Flue, people are just worried because of the 140-something people who died of it in Mexico recently. But nobody else has really died of it yet, which makes it sort of odd. Personally though, I think the media is making a bigger deal out of this than is warranted, given that it’s really just a typical flu virus with an exotic origin.
If you want a real virus, look at something like Ebola. It has up to a 90% fatality rate if you catch the worst strain of it. Now that’s a man’s virus.

I think it’s better to be afraid than for it to turn out to actually be dangerous and catch us unprepared. SARS and the avian flu were not dangerous only because we were prepared for them. Without proper vaccination and medicines, a lot more would have died. And I’ve heard that old vaccinations failed on this new flu.
