Safely Removing Hardware

I always use the ‘safely remove hardware’ thing when removing USB devices, even though I’m sure that I’ve closed all programs that are attempting to access the USB device. Though sometimes it’ll keep saying that a file is open in a program and I need to close the program before I can remove it, even though I’m sure it’s not. Sometimes I just leave it there until I have to shut down the computer anyway, then take it out after the computer’s off. Or I just remove the device anyway (after trying the ‘safely remove hardware’ again a bunch of times). Nothing bad ever happens to the files though. In other news, I like how neat the handwriting in the title frame is.

  • That scared me, to be honest.

  • Oh god, Unnamed Character broke reality.

  • lol still messed up if you push back.

  • I pushed back
    WHY WON’T IT STOP

  • that was creepy at a psychological level lol
lets hope nothing bad happens to us in seven days…..

but at least the handwriting in the title frame was neat.

  • Once I had plugging USB devices repeatedly, suddenly BSoD appears… maybe Reimu behind all of this… yup, Reimu using Hax Sign

  • OMFG, that kinda remind me of the scary random events of Yume Nikki D:

  • *falls over giggling nervously*

But, uh, if it complains that something’s still accessing a file … you could use Process Explorer to search for it, and close whatever’s doing it. Of course, you could also cause serious glitchiness …

  • Ah, I sometimes do and sometimes don’t use the safely remove hardware thing. Usually doesn’t do anything and half the time they fall out by themselves anyway…..

  • My computer is a jerk with this, it even tells me to do it if I wanna turn off my printer.

Two days after I ignored the first message, my computer tried to print out every file on my computer.

Then I had to reinstall my my printer, not three, not six, but ⑨ times

  • Going backwards the first time after accidentally skipping a panel, it’s even more amusingly confusing. “what is this I don’t remember reading this the first time agahasdjlfaldskjfklsd”

Well, at least there was no Corruption Death by Yuyuko… I think that’s good.

  • @tre Resist the Siren! Stay away from that town, Silent Hill! Don’t worry about me…I’ll just go outside and get some fresh air…maybe get eaten by monsters…

  • *reading flash while removing an USB device*
    …Oops. O_O

  • That drove me mad for about five minutes.
    Weird some stuff man.

  • Wow, did Unnamed Character just break the barrier between the real world and the Wired?

  • YUKARI DID IT.

In other news I rip out my USBs all the time. I had to use a Mac once, when I removed my USB it started nagging me about how I didn’t “disconnect” the USB from the system first, which was, like, annoying.

  • Meh, I usually don’t bother with “safely removing hardware”. Nothing ever really happens to me if I don’t click it. Just remove it and go.

But maybe I should start clicking that, lest I make a foolish mistake like Unnamed Character and end up breaking the world.

  • TRIPPIN’ BALLS

  • Step 1. Turn on your GBA with a cartridge in it.
    Step 2. Load this flash.
Step 3. Pull the cartridge out of the GBA; the GBA should now be making a terrible shrieking sound. If it is not, repeat steps 1 through 3 until it is, or try a different cartridge.
Step 4. Click on the flash, and hold down the Right Arrow on your keyboard.

You have successfully completed setup of your viewing environment. Enjoy!

  • That didn’t scare me at all, mostly due to me wondering how this flash was made instead of looking at glitches. And, shame on you, Kirby,… There is no END frame! Will Unnamed Character and Headphones character be stuck in this world of digital glitches for ever? Watch the next episode to find out!

  • I actually expected Yuyuko, you should bring her back again some time.

  • @ MarisaMuffin: Yay
    Confusing flash

  • It made me itchy.

  • the school pc i use still have win 2k, and when i pull it out without safely remove, the file i saved on this session would be erased~~

  • Silly KirbyM, look at what you have done to me. My computer finally broke or something and is (hopefully) being repaired at the moment. I’m typing this from my Wii; and I don’t have a keyboard.
    Mendokusee ( º,◇º)/ I can’t even type in Japanese.

    I’m dead serious.

Oh wait, that happened yesterday. Never mind.

    ◎☆○◇□△ζ·ω·)σ Merupo hair. Yay.

  • I never safely remove hardware, I like to live dangerously.

  • I safely removes sometime.
Scary thing DO happen when i try to rip my extrenal usb HDD,which i later fixed it.

    ENDLESS FLASH good damd it!

  • The first thing I thought seeing this was “Oh, good trick XD”, then, the second was “Wait, is UC swearing?”

  • Sorry for double posting, but y’know, the “Safely remove hardware” thing can be very usefull, at least ’round here.
First step is doing it, then, if you don’t have anything open and it stills keep warning you, it is because you have a Full Operating CITY of viruses inside your flash drive XDDDD

    And I’m serious about it.

  • That was awesome (and still is, since I don’t think it’s going to be ending within my lifetime).

“Though sometimes it’ll keep saying that a file is open in a program and I need to close the program before I can remove it, even though I’m sure it’s not”
Welcome to the wonderful world of memory (file handle?) leaks within Windows.

  • >> “Though sometimes it’ll keep saying that a file is open in a program and I need to close the program before I can remove it, even though I’m sure it’s not.”

When that happens, I try the other method of Safely Removing Hardware first before just giving up and removing it. The two methods:
    1) Right click, select the hardware
    2) Double left click, go through the somewhat longer process and press “Stop” at the end

  • Kirby, your flash is corrupted. It shows all weird and never ends.

  • Yukari did it, guys.

  • I was baffled for a long time when unplugging my external hard drive enclosure or turning it off would cause it to become unusable after it was turned back on or plugged back in. Turns out the “safely remove hardware” does have a practical function; now I reboot about once a month instead of once every few days.

Also, for those who don’t know, there’s a handy little utility called “unlocker” that allows you to check all processes using files on a device and it gives you the option to terminate them or “unlock” the files so that you can remove the device without any problems; this came in handy several times when I directed my torrent client to download files directly to an external device.

  • step one, fully enjoy the flash, press the right arrow key, after a few seconds go back to the start, right arrow key, it may start at a random part of the flash.

  • oh…one time,i remove the mp4 of my mom after charged it with music and forget the “safely remove hardware”…and a misterious orange line appears in the little monitor…we cry and all,a full drama….XD (that mp4 finally dead after a little accident…was broken XD)
other bad thing who happen is who the music is erased or fail. Now,when use USB from other people, ALWAYS use the safe remove.

  • Thar be this nifty program called Unlocker or something like that, which you can use to unlock any folder and/or drive which is used.

It’s a great help when it keeps saying that you are using it when you know that you aren’t.

  • Yep. I knew it.

I tried clicking back… but I knew it was no use

  • Missingno. Characters O_O

  • Hey! I actually have to deal with this stuff at work!

Due to the way NTFS and FAT work, if a program has an open handle to a file, we won’t dismount without being forced to, but if you yank the drive when one does and isn’t attempting to write to a file on it, you’re very unlikely to corrupt anything. This is mainly because we take a very conservative approach when caching writes to removable media, and by that I mean we don’t. There’s a performance/safety check box somewhere that you can flip that will make us do caching on your writes, but we’ll call you a moron for turning it on.

Anyway, to all you people suggesting unlocker or using Process Explorer to close the remaining handles, I strongly suggest that you don’t do that. HANDLEs are just numbers into a table that we do some translation to get real FileObjects. Because this is a table, those numbers can be reused. Consider this:

    HANDLE strongest = open(“cirno”); //strongest==9

… //We close cirno with process explorer here

    *** //Nothing happens

write(strongest, “awesome”); //This fails, because 9 is not a valid handle anymore

But, if we open another handle in that *** time:

    HANDLE foo = open(“bar”);//foo == 9

Then “awesome” will be written to bar rather than cirno rather than failing. This can really mangle your files, which is why I advise you don’t close other people’s handles for them. What should you do instead? Use Process Explorer to find which program has the handle and kill the program. When a program ends, all of its handles are freed by the OS, which will allow you to dismount your drive cleanly.

Anyway. tl;dr: Kill processes, not handles. If not, you might lose data.

  • I’m not surprised that something bad after the USB removal is gonna happen, but the behavior of the flash after that did scare me o_o;;.
Reminded me of a panel in Dioxin’s Ataisai where Cirno removes Rumia’s ribbon, then something bad happens to the panel itself.

Kept on clicking next to find the frame where the flash says “End”, but to no avail. Yeah, it’s perfectly “screwed”! xD

    Just sharing a tip:
Provided that absolutely nothing is accessing the USB drive, “Simply Remove Hardware” without a successful “Safely Remove Hardware” doesn’t seem to screw any files from the drive or screw the drive itself. Heck, that’s how we remove USBs with our Windows98SE system, always! xD
For the cautious ones, you could shut down your computer then remove it, like what Kirby does.

  • x.x Ack, pardon. It’s Dioxin’s Mega Flash, not Ataisai.

Most (if not all) of the USB devices that has storage in them tend to get affected pretty badly when not “properly removed”. Our Philips MP3 player never worked again after the removal of the device because we were in a hurry.

  • Blow on the cartridge.

  • I had a flash drive that would do that no matter if I “safely remove”d it or not.

  • what’s the worst that could hapdjkfsdj;gfhjgdjghf;vmh;bvyhrepgh aerh rehg dfipg haer[gf

  • i never use the ’safely remove hardware’, one day i conect my mp3, and like always i remove it without use the ’safely remove hardware’…and after that my mp3 dind’t work anymore T__T….it was a Philips mp3 player…and now i don’t have a mp3 for listeng music T__T why i dind’t use the ’safely remove hardware’? why? T____T
