Walfas Shop

As a follow-up to this post from yesterday, I finished adding a bunch of designs for shirts (and other things) to the Walfas shop on Zazzle. There’s currently a 10% off sale if you use the code “PRESWKNDSALE” but today’s the last day for the discount. If anyone buys a shirt (or poster/button/etc), post some pictures when you get it!

  • You are God.

  • OMGAWSOMAWSOMAWOMSOAMW!!!!! THANK YOU!!

  • *Looks in wallet*
    :(

  • “Alcolol”. I lol’d (again).

  • NO WAY, THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE!
    A MARISA’S NO WAY, THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE T-SHIRT!

  • @iapfah: Kirby is Haruhi Suzumiya.

Oh man now I really want a shirt, particularly Ikubi Akius, Death by Yuyushirt and Reimu Burger.

  • @thagreatcreator: You’re god. KirbyM is Haruhi. ZUN is THE God. I am Chuck Norris.

  • Agh…paycheck doesn’t process until tomorrow…

  • Zomg. That Reimu Burger shirt is DOUBLEPLUSAWESOME!! @_@

  • AND SPEAKING OF HARUHI…

…No there isn’t a Haruhi shirt, but Kirby seems to have added Konata for whatever reason, lol.

  • @everyone: oh ok

  • And with today you have officially moved up to the next level in internet popularity. Good job.

  • :O is this real? i’ll buy some of these soon =D

  • Zazzle’s being finicky and won’t let me purchase my Death By Yuyushirt! Work, curse you! WORK!

  • 5%, huh… makes me wonder if Cirno’s going to make a competitor with 9%.

  • I just ordered the strongest shirt in the world, but with Microfiber!

I may have to get a few more before I leave…

  • Good stuff, I’ll get some once I have money to spend.

  • Lul, I want the unnamed character in a circle

  • NoWaiThatsImpossible:O

i want the death by yuyuko one T.T

  • A-person-named-Letty

I’m so getting the (9)Crew and the Reimu Burger.
And the poster is SO going into my room.

  • I got the alternate Death By Yuyuko!!! shirt.

Since I’m in Canada, the shipping charges almost made the price double, but the handy dandy 10% off saved me 2$!

  • You should find someone who does figurines. Srsly.

/r/ NO WAY THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE t-shirt as well.

  • @Akiraita: Well, I already had a Konata drawing from awhile ago from this illustration I did for a cosplay cafe thing, and I thought I might as well add it as a shirt design.

@A-person-named-Letty: If you’re getting the poster, be aware that you can change the background color to something other than white in the customization options, in case a white background seems a bit boring. Also, there’s a white Reimu Burger shirt if you want to save money and don’t care about the shirt not being red.

@Anonymous: There’s already a “No way! That’s impossible!” shirt, you just have to click “view all products” and go to the second page to see it.

  • I’ll try to buy one of these on my birthday

  • Oh…

How come the black shirts are more expensive than the white shirts?

  • I’m waiting for a lawsuit to come for the Konata shirt design. I mean, Lucky Star is licensed in the US, isn’t it?

Also, it kind of sucks that all of the non-white designs cost like 9 dollars more than the white ones. I had kind of wanted to get Reimu burger in maroon, but I’m not willing to pay $23+ for it. Sadly, I usually wear khakis which means that I basically have to wear something darker than white.

  • Have purchased! Death By Yuyushirt and Nitori + Science!

If my bank account had any money left in it, I’d buy more!

  • @Kuiper: Oh, hmm, didn’t even think about that. Well, nobody bought a Konata shirt yet, so I guess I’ll just remove it. VOCALOID should be fine, right (in reference to the Black Rock Shooter T-shirt design)? Although I guess that’s a fan-made character anyway, since it’s not really Hatsune Miku. Oh well, I’ll remove that too, just in case.

Also, yeah, I set most of the T-shirt types as “value T-shirts” which are the cheapest shirts on there, but they only come in white. If you want a colored shirt, you’ll have to get a different types of shirt (but I’m guessing the material it’s made of is of higher quality), so unfortunately they’re more expensive.

  • NoWaiThatsImpossible:O

so kirbeh, would you get some of the profit from this?! :O!?

  • I’m still waiting for my Yukari Waffles.

But this is all sorts of awesome. I especially love the Reimu Burger shirts. And god, I scared myself after letting my cursor hang around the Yuyudeath shirts…and having it suddenly zoom in on me. I swear she almost ate me!!!

  • Oh god, I want one “My twuck!” T-Shirt!

    So cute I’m gonna die.

  • The Reimu Burger shirt is in the “Today’s Best” section.

  • Also, I’m commenting way too much, BUT…

Can you possibly make a shirt with Cirno saying “Hooray!” on the front, but with the big ⑨ on the back (like in The Strongest T-Shirt)? It would be incredibly appreciated; I’d draw you a fanart or something I guess.

  • Hover over the Death by Yuyuko preview in the shop. Trust me it’s totally aweso

  • Whoa, that’s pretty neat. And they ship internationally too.

And I assume the poster is a parody of that Pokomon one?

I think… the only problem maybe that you just put too many at one time that we can’t possibly buy all of them right now. :x

It seems it’s gone already, but, what’s the issue with the Konata one? I’m not sure how US laws handle it, but Kadokawa, which has the original licence in Japan approves of most derivative works on Lucky Star, Haruhi, etc. From what I found Googling, Lucky Star is licenced by Kadokawa Pictures USA and Bandai Entertainment, it says, but… why 2 companies? And Bandai is stricter in terms of the derivitive works.

Not exactly on doujin but, you can see Kadokawa’s rather open stance.

  • Im so buying that Reimu burger shirt, i love you kirby.

  • Zazzul is so expensive ;_;

  • @Talka: US Copyright and trademark law is stricter than Japan’s, I believe, especially when it comes to using intellectual properties for commercial sales. For an overarching example: doujin work in the states and sold for profit would likely lead to lawsuits.

As for the two licenses….possibly one handing production, the other handling distribution?

Oh, and nice for you to peek in. :D

  • … My order of the Death by Yuyushirt2 was cancelled because the image contained a copyright?

    Clearly something is wrong.

  • HAHAHA, the yuyuko swirl looks really like that cap ash(pokemon) wears long time ago. I loved the alternate Death by yuyushirt, shame myself for being unable to buy anything at the time T-T

  • @Dular: Ehhhh? Perhaps they think Touhou characters are copyrighted to Team Shanghai Alice and don’t know that ZUN allows people to sell things with his characters on them? I guess if the other people who ordered Touhou shirts have the same issue, I can send them an email about it or something. Sorta strange, though; if there are possible copyright issues in it, I wonder why they didn’t say anything to me about it.

  • … yeah … the fact that they’d let the buyers know but not the sellers is kinda … counterintuitive.

Oh well. New Scarlet Weather Archive! :x

  • walfas….shirts?..What?!

“Horaay” at the beginning of a new era
The rumia shirt design is my personal favourite.

also…lol at the fact that people living in japan would have to go through the effort of finding a way to get these touhou merchandise imported to them some how. Serves them right…..damn those people living in tokyo..right beside the hakurei reitaisai expo building..

  • What the–

I too have had my Death By Yuyushirt canceled! Outrage!

And why is Death By Yuyushirt copyright, but not Nitori + Science???

  • @KirbyM: Time to inform them then!

  • @Dular: Ditto. Poppy-Sama’s Back!

  • @Dular/theshim: Okay, I have sent them an inquiry regarding the supposed copyright issues of death by Yuyushirt! It might help if you guys inform them as well, though, since it’s always more convincing when multiple people say things. Anyway, I’m thinking it’s possible that they might ask for proof or something, and in that case I’ll need to find where ZUN says people can sell Touhou stuff online, but that might be hard to do seeing how I don’t read Japanese. I could just link to some other websites that sell Yuyuko-related stuff, since it seems to be just the Yuyushirt design that’s bringing up issues.

  • KirbyM- Well, ZUN acted like “ZUN DOES NOT APPROVE” of the MAIKAZE anime, since it could drive the audience away from the games and thinking the anime could mistake the audience for a real anime…

…Would the Walfas selling get the exact thought ZUN thought of the MAIKAZE anime?

  • @KirbyM: I intend to. Especially since I could just BARELY afford two shirts with the discount, and without it I’m down an awesome shirt and up a lot of rage.

In the meantime, I’m still buying the one. :D

  • I want to buy one :( but I haz no monies

  • @Mariku: Actually, I don’t think ZUN disapproved of the Maikaze anime per se, he only worried that the project would look so much like a fully commercial product that it would mislead people into thinking that it was the main focus of Touhou rather than the games. The project did well, but wasn’t nearly so huge a hit as to distract from the games being the primary focus of Touhou, so he’s fine with it. Or such is my understanding.

A small variety of apparel is hardly going to outshine the long-standing series of video games as the primary focus of Touhou, I should think. I can hardly claim to read ZUN’s mind (beer-soaked Japanese is a pain to slog through), but I think it’s reasonable to guess that he wouldn’t worry at all about the Walfas items the way he initially did about Maikaze.

  • Also, as if you still needed ideas, two come to mind: A Yukari “LoL, HaX TiMeS!!!1!” shirt, and a Suwako “All glory to the Hypnotoad!” shirt…though, considering the Yuyushirt, they’d probably sue for the latter…

  • THE GUNDAM BOX and the AWESOME beam from the Flash no. 200

  • I wonder what the creators of Gundam think of that “box with Gundam written on it” meme …

  • @Mariku: Basically what Sprocket said. There’s tons of sites online that sell Touhou stuff, like W-canvas, Paletweb, etc; probably tons of other lesser-known ones (at least in the western community) are allowed to do it. Although I just noticed that for some reason, I don’t really see too many Touhou T-shirts — I mostly just see doujinshi (and other things printed on paper), buttons, keychains, plushes, and figurines.

  • Hmm… Yuyucat shirt maybe?

And maybe Yukari saying “Darn you fox lady” from the getdown flash

    I dunno… ideas…

  • Ooh! Ooh!

Suwako doing the Hypnotoad, with the text “It’s a Moriya Shrine Conspiracy!”

  • well, not that it’s important or anything, but may i trouble you by asking what other 95% is made of?

  • Hm the Reimu Burger shirt is awesome.
But some China on the back would be awesome too.

  • @RootBeer: Danmaku! It’s not deadly if it doesn’t go through your hitbox.

  • @KirbyM: Well, Zazzle customer support just gave me a form letter. I guess you need to prove you can make the shirt, or maybe they just won’t listen to people who aren’t the creator. Either way, :( I really wanted a Death By Yuyushirt…

  • @theshim: Oh gosh darn it. I wonder why they haven’t responded to my email yet. Anyway, looks like a ton of other peoples’ orders got canceled recently too. I wonder why they don’t just make the product unavailable for purchasing, rather than waiting for someone to order it before saying it can’t be purchased. I will wait for their response, and they will probably ask for proof as well!

Edit: Okay, well I’ve set all Touhou stuff in the shop to be hidden, until this is all cleared up. Here’s a translation and interpretation of ZUN’s stance on selling Touhou stuff (link). There’s actually a line in there that says “Regarding the matter, basically please inform me before distribution, and I would grant permission to only sales through limited circulation channels,” so would that mean I’d have to ask ZUN first? That… would be hard to do considering I don’t really know any Japanese. Darn.

  • @KirbyM: I suggest asking someone who knows japanese to email for Zun’s approval, or failing that, there are plenty of translation sites that would probably suffice, although it won’t translate perfectly..

Anyone familiar with Touhou and knowing Japanese would gladly help you.

  • KirbyM- Well, they’d rather go for the other stuff besides shirts…

[OFF-TOPIC: I’d like to see the Walfas characters (including the Teacher and Bored-Looking character) do some sort of parody of Hare Hare Yukai.]

  • Well, you could always ask Talka for Japanese assistance.

  • T_T *is so sad*

  • KirbyM:
From what I can tell, for derivative works that are intended for sale outside of standard doujin venues, ZUN mainly asks that original copyright be acknowledged correctly and that he be asked/informed of the product for approval. His main potential objection is that the derivative-work creator not be making a fortune off of merchandise based on his characters. Making a modest amount, along the lines of standard fanzine income, is fine. I suspect you don’t cross that line, so you should be good.

Write up your permission request to ZUN in English, and include links to your Touhou-related shirt designs. Links to your site (and maybe even the Walfas search results on Nicovideo) might help. Provide an idea of how much you could expect to make off these. Post it here or send it to me, and I can try translating it for you and sending it to him on your behalf.

  • Or yeah, you could ask Talka, since he’s in Japan and is probably a bit more fluent than I am…ahem.

  • PLEASE MAKE SANAE SHIRT FOR THOSE OF US WHO PREFER “SANAE BURGER” INSTEAD

  • AAAGGHHH NOOO!!!! I CAN’T SEE ANY OF THE COOL SHIRTS LISTED ABOVE!!! I CAN’T BE COOL WITHOUT COOL SHIRTS!!!

    CAPSLOCK IS COOL!! AAAAGGGHHH!!!

  • I still haven’t heard anything about my Cirno shirt… I wonder if it still went through?

  • lol are you the model for those t-shirts?

  • For what I understand, the whole “ask for permission” thing is for when you are selling stuff commercially instead of as a doujin work, so I’d search for what other people who make touhou doujin stuff do.

Though seeing how you have the copyrights problem with the shop site, you probably should ask ZUN about it anyway.

  • @copyrights: Nay, Kirby is not. The models are just pictures of random people wearing shirts, and they Photoshop the design onto the pictures.

  • I just got my second “Out of Stock” e-mail. I’m trying to get the Cirno one printed on a nice shirt so it will last longer, but every shirt I pick they wait a few days, then tell me it’s out of stock! Very frustrating…

  • A-person-named-Letty

    Dangit…
I want a Yuyu Swirl cap!

  • @Sprocket: Well, here’s what I have written (link), if you’re up for translating/sending it. You can add something in there about me not being able to speak Japanese and the fact that the message is translated or something like that. Also, I’m not entirely sure how much I’d be making in the long run, but it’s about 15% the price of every product sold, but there are bonuses if I sell a lot each month (+7% if I sell over $100 in a month, and more if I sell over $1000 a month, although I doubt that’ll happen, since the bonuses go back to normal at the start of a new month). Anyway, you didn’t leave an email address in the email field of your post, so I guess I’ll just leave this here if you want to translate it. Thanks a lot!

And I still haven’t received a response from Zazzle yet… perhaps I put in the wrong return email address or something.

  • KirbyM:

Sorry, I thought I’d added my email before. As I said elsewhere, I’m sort of a blog n00b.

I’ll get this done ASAP. Did you want me to put it up here when I’m done? I’ve hunted about the site some and don’t see a direct email link for you.

  • Actually, now that I rethink it a bit, there’s not any need to post or email the translation of your request by itself. I can just email it to ZUN and keep you up to date on the progress, either via email or here on the boards.

  • A-person-named-Letty

Now that I think about it… You can sell the Yuyuko Cap without permission, you just have to rename it Sega Dreamcast Cap.
un-noticed cameos easily make up for copyrights

  • But the Dreamcast is still copyrighted by Sega. :o

  • Well, maybe it is exactly why the yuyu-shirt orders keep being cancelled?
Since the swirl kind of looks like the Sega Dreamcast logo, maybe it is the copyright believed to be violated, and actually not touhou’s copyright?
After all, if I am not mistaken, only the Yuyuko’s shirts orders has been cancelled, right?

  • @Kaul: Canceling an order because of a swirly thing seems a little stupid if you ask me, although it’s entirely possible. :x

I wonder if they’ll let you off the hook if you, like, make the swirly thing go the other way around, lol.

  • @Kaul: Well, initially it was just the death by yuyushirts, but then later they started canceling orders for Reimu Burger, create.swf poster, strongest t-shirt, Kaguya vs Mokou, Nitori Science, uhh… probably a bunch of other ones as well. Some people were lucky, though; I think some of the earlier orders went through without any problem. I’m guessing they have people checking shirt designs when a print is requested, and maybe it was a different person each time or something. Anyway, yeah, I doubt it has anything to do with Yuyuko’s swirl, though.

  • Ah, too bad… It will now all depend on ZUN’s answer I guess?

I need those shirts, like, BADLY, and I bet I am not the only one.
It is like television : you don’t need it, but once you have seen it, you can’t live without it! (well, I don’t watch television anymore, but let’s say the comparison still works anyway!)
